"Puffy" batteries

I have puffy lipos which are marginal. They say don't use them, so tonight I'm getting rid of them. The pack says do not disassemble. Well I CAN disassemble. "I'm an expert"   I've made packs from the leftover good batteries. A couple of things. The solder tabs are welded to the lipo output tabs. You cannot and should not try to solder to anything but the SOLDER TABS. Please take care with the sharp x-acto. Puncture and then you will have to scrap the cell. Third, leave one of the center connections open, until you've soldered the ends (battery leads) Work from the outside in. In other words in the series circuit, work inward from both ends. This will help you keep from shorting the entire pack while working.

Since I've rid my packs of "puffy" cells they deliver the current the pack should. Puffed batteries can only deliver a fraction of the discharge rate of a good cell.

Anyone else working with raw cells? Do you guys think it's too dangerous to do? I can honestly say this.

I HAVE NEVER HAD A FIRE OR EXPLOSION.  Read up on the cells, and see on websites that they do sell individual cells. Only charger you can use is a lipo charger, that delivers current up until the cell reaches 4.2 volts, no more. Packs MUST be Balanced. Three and more cells in series can have some cells passing on the current without charging. So 8.4 volts could be one cell with 3 volts ( below 3.2 the cell is dead ) and one with 5.4...and it WILL POP. Read the individual packs rating on the minimum charge value. I take my two cell packs to about 7 volts...then charge, and I haven't had overdischarged cells and problems. The cell is "rated" 3.7 volts. Know the min and max value. It will save you.

I'm not going to EXPERIMENT on puffy cells. I'm getting rid of them. They happen because the discharge rate has been exceeded. Don't push small packs too hard.

 

My 330 watt motor 1050kv, needs a three cell, and 11x7 prop. 330 watts/11 volts =  30 amps. If my pack is 2.2 amp hour (2200 mah) my continuous "C" must be 15. the pack has 33 amps continuous to offer. A 12C pack will "PUFF"  (26.4 amps)
